Weather Makes News

The death toll keeps rising from the devastating earthquake-related Tsunami in Asia... sad news for so many people. Almost 80,000 are feared dead so far. (Just heard from my own friends from India, and they report that their relatives are all safe.)

Here in the Western US, we're getting heavy rains from a winter storm, causing some flooding north of here, near Sedona, where people are being evacuated. As I am busy working on several projects, trying to wrap up my own affairs for the year -- and to plan for next year, the scenes from Asia, combined with heavy rains here so close to home, are an awsome reminder of nature's power and the meaning of life.

The 2004 Election

Yes... I know. I never commented about the recent election... I've been waiting for the right words, and now they have come to me from a Baltimore sage and legend, by way of a forwarded e-mail:

"When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any, save the most elemental, men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost. All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre--the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright moron."

- H. L. Mencken, in The Baltimore Sun, July 26, 1920

(I have not yet verified this quote... That will have to wait for my next visit to the new H. L. Mencken Room in the new addition to Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library. Maybe Sharon Henderson, who sent the e-mail, will come with me, and we'll get a full personal tour from another friend, Reggie Harris, who works there.)

Christmas Parade in Phoenix

Phoenix Lights
Originally uploaded by bdlyles.
Despite rain, the annual Electric Light Parade went on as scheduled this Saturday. Sponsored by APS, the local energy company here in Arizona, the parade usually attracts over 250,000 spectators. This year's turnout was light, but that meant plenty of viewing space for those of us who did brave the weather. It was a great night for all.

One year ago I attended the TGen holiday party, where I tried my best to fit into the country-western theme... Tonight I was glad to do something a little more traditional.

Back from East Coast Visit

O.K. I know I promised weekly updates at one time, but the past few months have been busy... I've been working for clients on both coasts, and I recently returned from a brief trip to the Baltimore-Washington area, mostly to visit family, clients and new business contacts. I did not have time to see many personal contacts, but I hope to head back East soon. Meanwhile, remember to send comments and news about you to my guestbook!
